About the Lectionary

The Daily Lectionary presents a systematic process for reading the Bible over a two-year cycle.

The schedule provides for reading the New Testament through once each year while the Old Testament selections extend over the entire period. The readings are also designed to reflect the seasons and festivals of the church year so that Advent and Christmas readings include prophesies of the Messiah, Christ’s birth narratives, and expectations of the Second Coming. The Psalms are the prayer book of the Bible and have a special place in daily prayer.

As a part of our church-wide discipleship, we follow the daily lectionary in the Book of Common Worship Daily Prayer, which also contains prayers and intimate worship services. Feel free to pick up one of the books from the book case in the Parlor (accessible via the Sharp Atrium) for a suggested donation of $15. (Checks may be placed in an offering plate and made payable to “Shadyside Presbyterian Church” with “Daily Lectionary” in the memo line.) We hope you will join us on this journey of discipleship! If you have questions, please contact the church office.

Many options for following the lectionary are available at www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/devotions. Especially those who travel often will want to know that they can get the readings e-mailed or podcast automatically via RSS feed — and, yes, there’s even an app for that!  Select the option that best suits your schedule and needs, and start building your spiritual life along with us through daily prayer!
