Youth Ministry
The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club is the Sunday school class geared toward junior and senior high school students. Students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join us in the Youth Room on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. for a lesson with a light breakfast. The class has several teachers who rotate on a monthly basis. Class discussions follow a curriculum which focuses on the Sunday lectionary.
Confirmation
This year-long process for 8th and 9th graders includes Sunday morning classes, service work, a one-on-one mentorship, and a spring retreat. Each student drafts a personal statement of faith and is received by the Session before publicly affirming his or her baptismal vows on Confirmation Sunday. Weekly classes occur during the education hour (9:30 to 10:45 a.m.) and include topics such as theology, church history, polity, and spiritual disciplines. This class takes place every other year.
SPYS
SPYS is an acronym for Shadyside Presbyterian Youth Sundays, the church’s youth group. Youth in grades 6 through 12 meet on Sundays at the church for lunch, games, and discussion, usually from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Parents
Parents take turns volunteering to provide a simple breakfast for Breakfast Club or a simple lunch for SPYS. Chaperones for retreats and outings also are occasionally needed.
