Vacation Bible School 2019

Come, Holy Spirit, Come: Exploring Pentecost

Details

Vacation Bible School:
Monday through Friday
June 17 through 21
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Closing Celebration:
Friday, June 21
1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Purpose

To create a Christian community and devote our time to fun, Bible study, love, and service. This year, our theme will explore the mystery and wonder of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Who Can Attend

Participants should be 4-year-olds through children who have completed second grade. Older children and youth are needed to serve as junior and senior counselors. Applications are available online and through the Christian Education office.

Families who are not members of Shadyside Presbyterian Church are encouraged to participate. Our VBS curriculum is non-denominational Christian. Other traditions enrich our understanding of ourselves.

Tuition

Tuition is $50 per child, or $90 per family, for the week; financial aid is available. Class size will be limited to 15 students, and we likely will have two groups of 4-5 year-olds. The total enrollment is limited to 75 students (5 groups of 15). There is no fee for junior and senior counselors.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

The children will play outdoors, if possible, or indoors daily. They should dress for relaxed games and playground play. They also will be enjoying some messy crafts.

Lunch

Each child should bring a lunch daily. Lunches will be stored in cubbies assigned to the children on the first day of VBS. Please plan to pack items that do not need to be refrigerated.

Friday Closing Celebration

On Friday, June 21, the last day of VBS, at 1:00 p.m. we will celebrate our week together with a Pentecost birthday party for the church. Before we enjoy our party in the Parish Hall, the children will present a musical program they have prepared during the week in the sanctuary. All members of the church family are welcome to join us for this joyful celebration.

Daily Offering

We will collect a daily offering to support our sponsored child at Promised Land Ministries in Guatemala. You and your child should decide what best suits your family for this kind of disciplined giving. We also will collect an offering on Friday afternoon at the closing celebration.

Typical Schedule 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Each age group will rotate among activity centers. Below is a sample schedule for the day.

Volunteer Opportunities for 3rd-12th Grade Graduates and Adults

Junior and Senior Counselors

If you are too old to enroll in VBS, we need you. Please apply as junior and senior counselors on the application (download PDF here). You will work under the direction of church staff and adult volunteers. You will have special training to prepare you for your specific leadership role. Getting to know our counselors is always the children’s favorite part of Vacation Bible School.

Family Participation

Families are requested to choose one or more of the following to help facilitate the success of our program:

  • prepare craft materials and decor in advance of VBS
  • lead a craft or activity center daily (or on specific days during the week)
  • help with lunch one day during the week
  • help provide snack one morning
  • set up for Friday’s closing celebration
  • help with arrival on Monday morning

We need your help whether you have only one hour or a whole week to give. Please share as much time as you can.
