A Howard C. Scharfe Fellowship Endowment Speaker Series
Each year, Shadyside Presbyterian Church, through the Howard C. Scharfe Endowment, supports pastors in their post-graduate studies for the benefit of the Church and for the glory of God. Through this generous gift, pastors and churches for decades have been blessed to grow in new ways. This year, Shadyside Presbyterian Church has invited four recent recipients to share over dinner and through worship about their studies and how they are practicing what they learn in their congregations.
Please join us for dinner at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall, followed by vespers in the Chapel at 7:00 p.m., to see and hear about what God is up to in the church and in the world! Please contact the church office to RSVP.
On January 23, 2019, we welcome Rev. Rachelle McCalla as our speaker. Rev. McCalla has been serving the First United Presbyterian Church in Atlantic, Iowa, since January of 2017. Her ecclesial interests include exploring questions like, why are we here? And, how can we glorify God together?
She is currently working toward a Doctorate of Ministry in Science and Theology at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. During her studies, she enjoys bringing back thoughtful messages to her congregation. Rev. McCalla writes, “Sometimes it is hard for people to connect the world of the Bible to the world we live in today. Scientific advances have, at times, appeared to open gulfs between the world as we understood it before, and the way we understand it now. Sometimes that disrupts our faith, but it doesn’t need to. The more we learn about science, and the more we learn about God, the more we discover the two aren’t in conflict at all. In fact, they often support one another in surprising and faith-encouraging ways.”
