Music in a Great Space Concert

March 15 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Seton Hill University’s Una Voce

The 27th concert season of Music in a Great Space continues with Una Voce, the chamber choir of Seton Hill University, on Sunday, March 15, 2020, at 3:00 p.m.

Seton Hill University’s Una Voce will offer the Pennsylvania premiere of Dr. Stephen Caldwell’s work, Pre-Existing Condition. In 2016, Stephen and his wife, Maura, were expecting their first child. During a routine visit, it was discovered that their unborn son had a quartet of life-threatening heart abnormalities known as Tetrology of Fallot. It was unclear at the time if the baby would survive. During his first year, young William had two open-heart surgeries to repair the issues with his heart. To process this, Dr. Caldwell composed Pre-Existing Condition, a choral/instrumental work which took third place in the America Prize for composition. Scored for choir, piano, flute, and percussion, the work is a musical representation of the family’s journey.

The program also will include Andrea Clearfield’s Into the Blue, Peter de Mets’ Blessings, and Steven Sametz’s Let Us Carry On That Dream, a new setting of Robert F. Kennedy’s address after the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Mark A. Boyle

Una Voce is the chamber choir of Seton Hill University. Membership is by audition and represents a variety of majors offered at the University. The ensemble performs both on an off campus quite regularly. Recent performances have included Carmina Burana with the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, A Procession Winding Around Me with guest guitarist Loren Fortna, and joint performances with high school choirs and other university choirs. Una Voce often commissions new choral works, bringing new music to life.

Dr. Mark A. Boyle, conductor of Una Voce, is the Director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Seton Hill University. He is a poet and composer, and is also the director of the Pittsburgh Compline Choir. He is sought after as a guest conductor and clinician. Dr. Boyle’s poetry has been set by Peter de Mets, his regular writing partner; Wayne Dietterick; and David Lockart. Along with Jane Boyle, his wife and a music educator, Mark Boyle serves as a chorister in the Chancel Choir at Shadyside Presbyterian Church.

No tickets necessary for admission; donations appreciated.
