Shadyside Presbyterian Church’s Malachi Market is, in part, inspired by Alternative Gifts International, Inc., a non-profit, inter-faith agency begun in 1980 by Harriet Prichard, former Director of Christian Education at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, California. Her hope was to find a way for children to give gifts to add to the justice and peace of the world in the name of Jesus Christ during the Advent and Christmas season.
Malachi Market derives its name from Malachi, the prophet who spoke to God’s people when they were expecting God to bring them justice and peace. Malachi calls the people of God to help “prepare the way” (Malachi 3:1). Preparing the way for the Lord means to join God in bringing justice by tending to the orphans, the widows, the foreigner, the hungry, the sick, the poor, and the imprisoned in the world. This, Malachi believes, is how the people of God find their delight and blessing. It goes with God’s own delight.
As Advent draws near, we invite you to consider purchasing unique and useful gifts in honor of your loved ones through the Malachi Market. Now in its third year, this alternative gift market sells relief and development gifts to benefit those in need locally, nationally, and internationally. Catalogs will soon be available, and gifts may be purchased in the parish hall on the designated dates.
The monies raised from the designated purchases will be distributed to families in need by nonprofit agencies that guarantee their delivery. This year, gifts will support Beginning with Books; Garfield Jubilee Association; Girls Hope of Pittsburgh; Off the Floor Pittsburgh, a ministry dedicated to eradicating poverty by providing basic needs to families eating and sleeping on the floor; Bibles for Eastern Europe; Christianity in Russia, supporting the work of two missionaries; Global Links, a medical aid organization; and Vintage Senior Center.
Your monetary gift includes a card with the recipient organization’s name and an ornament. Information about the charities also will be available. All gifts are tax-deductible.
