Almost evenly divided between professional singers and
devoted volunteers, the thirty-one members of the Chancel
Choir participate in worship services every Sunday at The
Shadyside Presbyterian Church. Their repertoire includes
the classic masterpieces of the choral tradition as well
as works representing contemporary and multicultural perspectives.
The Chancel Choir was established in 1936 by organist and
director of music Russell G. Wichmann, who brought the music
program to national prominence in the course of his 51-year
tenure. J. David Hart succeeded Wichmann in 1987 and served
the church through 1990. In 1992 John Walker was appointed
director of music and organist at Shadyside Church. How
Can I Keep From Singing is the choir's fourth CD release
under Walker's direction. In addition to the choral CD's
Dr. Walker has recorded two organ CD's, Romance and
Christmas Rediscovered.
The Shadyside congregation has demonstrated an exceptionally
high commitment to the importance of music in the worship
life of the church. A new pipe organ
was installed in 1994. At the same time, interior renovations
dramatically improved the acoustics of the sanctuary. Over
the years, church leaders have consistently provided for
the quantity and quality of resources needed to maintain
a program of musical excellence.
