Special Events

The Special Events Mission Action Community (MAC) organizes major fundraising events each year and determines the ministries which will receive the proceeds from the events.

  • Mars Hill Mission Experience
In partnership with the Community Housing Coalition of Madison County (www.chcmadisoncountync.org), Shadyside organizes and participates in a one week intergenerational mission trip to the Appalachian region of North Carolina.  Youth and adults work on home improvement projects, while children participate in age appropriate service opportunities.  Shadyside expects to commission 50 members for the 2010 trip, which is scheduled for July 11-17. • Strawberry Festival
For nearly 20 years, Shadyside has hosted this traditional evening of fun, games and delicious food to celebrate the impending arrival of summer.  With something for everyone, the festival offers a perfect evening of family fun.  Festival style food is served, baked goods are sold and activities range from balloon sculpting to pony rides.  Proceeds from the festival support a preselected ministry partner.  Click here to visit a photo gallery of the 2009 Strawberry Festival.
  • Golf Outing
Shadyside’s annual golf outing supports Hosanna House, Inc. (www.hosannahouse.org).  Based in Wilkinsburg, Hosanna House is a multi-purpose community center which serves over 27,000 people per year.  This ministry provides opportunities that will empower families and individuals to discover, acknowledge and develop their maximum potentially physically, spiritually and economically.  The golf outing has provided thousands of dollars in support over the last ten years.  Read more about the 2010 Golf Outing here and register to attend.
  • Christmas Bazaar
For over sixty years, Shadyside has supported various organizations through proceeds from our annual Christmas Bazaar.  Throughout the year, a small group of committed members collects, cleans, and prices items which have been donated to the annual Christmas Bazaar.  In addition to selling collected items and baked goods, the church offers a luncheon and an afternoon tea.
  • Malachi Market
Shadyside’s alternative gift market is held on two consecutive Sundays during Advent.  The market was created with the hope that friends and members of Shadyside would consider giving gifts that add to the justice and peace of the world.  Each year, Shadyside invites select partners to participate in the market, offering “gifts” that range from covering the cost of a shelter meal to purchasing trees for reforestation projects.  In addition to raising funds, the additional hope is that the market brings awareness of our neighbors in need. Learn more about the 2010 Malachi Market here.
  • Presents for Patients
Members of Shadyside purchase Christmas presents for patients of the Western Psychiatric Institute.  Often times, the present contributed by a Shadyside member is the only one received by the individual patient.  Shadyside friends and members gather for a fellowship dinner before departing to purchase the requested gifts.
