Women's Book Study
A group of women who share an interest in reading and connecting that reading to our Christian journey meets once a month for conversation and encouragement in our faith. And, of course, we share “crumpets” (our term for some form of bread or pastry), coffee, discussion, and prayers. We have read a wide variety of books over the years and welcome new participants.
We meet in the East End of Pittsburgh in one of our homes on the second Saturday of each month. We gather at 10:00-10:30 a.m. with coffee and crumpets and start discussion at 10:30, ending promptly at 11:30 a.m. We are very careful to stick to this time schedule, mindful of the many other demands for our time.
Currently, we are reading Henri Nouwen’s Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World. Written in 1992 toward the end of Nouwen’s life (1932-1996), Life of the Beloved is considered by many to be the work that best captures Nouwen’s thought and a book that has been life-changing for many.
Life of the Beloved was written initially as a response by Nouwen to a young friend, a self-described “secular Jew,” who requested that Nouwen speak a “word of hope” to the many who no longer look to churches or synagogues for help as they face the difficulties of life in our time. It is recommended that this book not be read alone, but in the context of our connection with others.
Please contact the church office for additional information. We would be glad for you to join us.
