"Run for Haiti" FAQ
Interested in joining our efforts to Run for Haiti in the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, May 6, 2012? Runners are given a free pass to participate on a five-person relay team comprised of SPC congregants and their friends. In exchange for the pass, they are asked to invite their friends, family, and colleagues to support them through pledges. Each runner is asked to raise $100. Since we have 10 relay team passes – for a total of 50 runners – we hope to raise at least $5,000! Sign up at the church or contact Jeff Schooley by Wednesday, March 28. Read on for details.
When do we begin training?
On Wednesday, February 22 – immediately following Ash Wednesday vespers – a “Faith and Fitness” Bible study will be led by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary graduate and avid runner, Caitlin Rohrer. The Lenten season is about sacrifice and spiritual discipline. Running, too, involves both of these elements; so, as Lent begins, we will kick off our marathon training with this one-hour study in the Hulme Room.
Who can run?
The Pittsburgh Marathon is a city-wide community event. In this spirit, SPC is offering our free race day passes to any team with at least one SPCer on it. As such, this is a great opportunity to invite your friends and family who love to run to join you in running for a purpose. We only ask that anyone who accepts a free race day pass agrees to raise $100 in pledges from their family, friends, and colleagues.
What if I don't have a team?
If you want to run, but don’t have a full team, call the church and you will be placed on a team. Team members will be announced prior to race day so that you all might be able to get together and encourage one another in your training.
Wait! How far do I have to run?
The marathon relay divides the 26.2-mile course into five different legs with distances ranging from 3.5 to 6.4 miles. Once teams are made, team members will be able to decide which length best suits their abilities. (Access the Pittsburgh Marathon map here.)
