About the Malachi Market
Shadyside Presbyterian Church’s Malachi Market is, in part, inspired by Alternative Gifts International, Inc., a non-profit, inter-faith agency begun in 1980 by Harriet Prichard, former Director of Christian Education at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, California. Her hope was to find a way for children to give gifts to add to the justice and peace of the world in the name of Jesus Christ during the Advent and Christmas season.
Malachi Market derives its name from Malachi, the prophet who spoke to God’s people when they were expecting God to bring them justice and peace. Malachi calls the people of God to help “prepare the way” (Malachi 3:1). Preparing the way for the Lord means to join God in bringing justice by tending to the orphans, the widows, the foreigner, the hungry, the sick, the poor, and the imprisoned in the world. This, Malachi believes, is how the people of God find their delight and blessing. It goes with God’s own delight.
This Advent season, as we prepare for the coming of our Lord, consider the call to bring delight to ourselves and to God by giving gifts that help create more justice and peace in our needy world. Buy your Christmas gifts at the Malachi Market. This way, in God’s name and in honor of those you love, you and your children can give gifts that lift up people.
