An interesting and varied group of women has been gathering twice each month to explore the Bible study published by Presbyterian Women for our denomination. Every year, we are blessed by new participants and by how each study reveals God’s presence and purpose in our lives in ways we needed to hear – Scripture works that way.

A new member orientation class will be held on Saturday, February 11, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and will include introductions of our staff and ministries; an overview of our tradition and faith, presented by Dr. Barnes; and a tour of our sanctuary, given by Elder Tim Engleman. You also will have the opportunity to meet others who are new to Shadyside Presbyterian Church. New members will be received during worship on Sunday, February 19.

Women's Book Study

A group of women who share an interest in reading and connecting that reading to our Christian journey meets once a month for conversation and encouragement in our faith. And, of course, we share “crumpets” (our term for some form of bread or pastry), coffee, discussion, and prayers. We have read a wide variety of books over the years and welcome new participants.

Missions Mistakes … and the Future of Missions – led by Jeff Schooley

This study will explore how certain colonializing tendencies were part of the large missional wave in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. With an eye to the (inadvertent) consequences of this season of missional activity, we will then focus on what the future of missions looks like. This study will explore this history of missions through the lens of SPC’s budding mission partnership in China.

Every Sunday we stand to stay the Apostles’ Creed. But do we allow this ancient document to form our understanding of the faith? On Wednesday, February 22 – immediately following Ash Wednesday vespers – a “Faith and Fitness” Bible study will be led by Pittsburgh Theological Seminary graduate and avid runner, Caitlin Rohrer. The Lenten season is about sacrifice and spiritual discipline. Running, too, involves both of these elements; so, as Lent begins, we will kick off our marathon training with this one-hour study in the Hulme Room.

Lent is a call to find spiritual renewal. One of the greatest disciplines for finding this renewal is prayer. The Psalms have long served as the prayer and hymnbook for people of faith. Living Stones Pilgrimage

This is a journey to learn from the indigenous Church of Jerusalem. The members of our Mother Church have invited us as their distant children to visit them in order to better understand the issues that now challenge their ministry. Some time will be spent seeing the holy sites of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, and Galilee; however, the focus on the trip will be on listening to the voices of the “living stones” that struggle today for survival.
