Lord Jesus, this has to be among the most profound questions of life.  You asked it of two men who had been following John the Baptist, but who started to follow you.  They stumbled in their response, and could only come up with, “Where are you staying?”  But you knew they were looking for more than that.  And surely they did as well, although they couldn’t tell you at the time what it was that drove them to follow one leader after another.

We, too, are clearer about the person, strategy, or advice we are following than where it will lead.  That is because we don’t really know what we are looking for; we just know that we haven’t found it.

Then you come along, and we start to follow.  Eventually we get so enthralled with you that we stop caring so much about where or what you are leading us toward.  So, yes – all we really need to know is where we are staying tonight.  Amen.
