“They have no wine.” (John 2:3)
You, holy Savior, were once at a wedding in Cana. After the wine ran out at the reception, your mother came to you with the stark words: “They have no wine.” I don’t know what she expected you to do. Was she just asking you to run to the liquor store? Was she saying that it was time to go home since the wine had run out? Or was she looking for a miracle?
You responded by saying that your time had not yet come. I suppose your reply means there will be a day when you ensure that the wine, joy, and celebration never run out. But like most mothers of adult children, Mary was confused by your mission in life and essentially said, “Do what you want.” And then you did. You miraculously gave them better wine than they had previously, and the joy of this little wedding persevered.
Thank you for not waiting until the end times, whenever that is, to intervene and give us more joy than we deserve. And tell your mom that we appreciate her interceding for us.
As a Protestant, I have always been a bit confused about what to do with Mary. But I do understand this scene, and I’m so grateful for her intercession. It makes me smile to wonder if maybe the prayers of all mothers come with special importance to you. Amen.
