“Go home … .” (Mark 5:19)
You had just cast a legion of demons out of a man. The townsfolk who heard about this were more afraid than impressed. They asked you to leave. The man, who had been driven out of his mind by these demons, was so grateful for his sanity that he begged you to let him follow you. He would have gladly left those townsfolk who abandoned him to a cemetery while he was crazy. But you sent him back to them – the people who kicked you out of town.
It is ironic how you sent people home when they wanted to follow you, and yet you told others to follow you when they seemed happy at home. So how are we to find the moral to these stories? When do we leave, and when do we stay?
Knowing you, my hunch is that it is all about which choice calls for the most faith.
