There must be times when we make you laugh – not in derision, but in the way a parent laughs to see a child playing dress up. It’s both silly and endearing. King Saul had to be feeling pretty bad about letting David fight his battle with Goliath. So he tried to dress the young lad in his royal armor. Not only did it not fit, but David couldn’t even move under its weight. …

“… while the sun’s light failed.” (Luke 23:45)

While your son, our Savior, was dying, there was only darkness because “the sun’s light failed.” We know about this darkness – especially the dark moments of grief, heartache, sickness, and the despairing thought that the light will never return. …

“We ponder your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple.” (Psalm 48:9)

I have long lost count, O God, of how many times I’ve heard someone say, “I don’t have to go to church to worship.” As one who usually leads worship, even I have thought it would be easier to draw closer to you if I wasn’t worried about the various components of the service. (Why isn’t the microphone working?) …

I can believe that you deliver me because I get in trouble. I also can believe that you deliver me because that’s just what you do as the Savior, and you like your job. But this verse claims that you deliver me because you delight in me. Really? Delight? Most days I don’t even delight in myself. …

“I have lent him to the Lord.” (1 Samuel 1:28)

Hannah spent her life waiting for you to give her a baby. When you finally did, she took him to the priest and left him there. I have always wondered about this. Why did she return this deeply desired gift so quickly? …
