“Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)

Lord Jesus, in the previous sentence you made it pretty clear that you are the living water. And the next sentence claims that it is the Holy Spirit who makes you flow out of my heart. So that means I’ve got both you and the Spirit at work within my heart. That is a good thing, because my heart can get pretty messed up on its own. …

“I am not the Messiah.” (John 3:28)

Gracious Savior, you were always so impressed with John the Baptist. You never had doubts about him, even when he eventually had serious misgivings about you. Perhaps that is because John was never confused about himself. He never thought he was the Messiah. Instead, he called himself the “friend of the bridegroom.” …

“But Jesus … would not entrust himself to them.” (John 2:24)

It is striking that even you have boundary issues. You are the incarnation of God, and yet you, too, have to be careful with your heart. It is even more striking that, according to this text, the people who made you the most cautious were those who believed in your name because they saw the “signs” you were doing. …

“The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” (John 1:9)

“Everyone” doesn’t leave out many people, Lord. The Gospel writer John begins his good news for us with the incredible claim that you are the light that shines within all of us. …
